Begin by thoroughly washing the split pigeon pea (arhar dal) under running water.
In a pressure cooker, cook the washed dal with an appropriate amount of water until it becomes tender. set it aside.
Peel and dice the green pumpkin into bite-sized pieces.
Peel and finely chop the shallots.
In a pot, combine the diced pumpkin and chopped shallots. add a pinch of asafoetida and salt. cook until the pumpkin turns soft and tender. remove from heat.
