Rinse the whole grain rice and masoor dal (red lentils) separately and soak them in water for about 30 minutes. drain and set aside.
In a pot, heat a portion of the olive oil. add the cumin seeds and let them splutter.
Add the bay leaf, ground coriander, ground black pepper, and red chili powder. saut„© for a minute until the spices release their aroma.
Add the drained rice and lentils to the pot. saut„© them in the spices for a couple of minutes.
Add 4 cups of water and salt to the pot. bring the mixture to a boil.
