To prepare the spicy chettinad fish curry, clean the fish fillets and marinate them with salt and turmeric powder. set aside.
In a shallow frying pan, heat oil and fry the big onions until they turn brownish. keep them aside for grinding later.
In the same pan, add the shallots and fry for 2 minutes, then add the tomatoes. turn off the heat and cover the pan with a lid.
In a grinder, make a fine powder of cumin seeds, black peppercorns, cloves, cinnamon, cardamom, and red chillies. set this spice powder aside for later use.
In the same grinder, blend together the fried onions, ginger, garlic, grated coconut, and tamarind to make a smooth paste.
