Wash the chana dal and split urad dal thoroughly and soak them in water for about 30 minutes. drain the water and set aside.
In a pressure cooker, combine the soaked dals, turmeric powder, and a pinch of salt. add enough water to cover the dals.
Pressure cook the dals until they are soft and well-cooked. allow the cooker to release pressure naturally before opening it.
Meanwhile, dry roast the dried red chillies, coriander seeds, cumin seeds, and fenugreek seeds until fragrant. grind them into a fine powder and set aside.
In a small bowl, soak the tamarind pulp in a little warm water and extract the tamarind juice. discard any solids.
