Preparing the lentil dumplings:
Soak the chana dal and arhar dal in water for about 3 hours. then drain and grind them into a coarse paste.
Finely chop the onion, red chilli, fennel seeds, cumin seeds, and asafoetida. mix these with the dal paste.
Add chopped coriander leaves and 2.5 curry leaves to the mixture. season with a pinch of salt.
Shape the mixture into small dumplings and steam them until cooked. set aside.
