Wash and clean the chicken pieces, then marinate them with lemon juice, ginger paste, garlic paste, salt, turmeric powder, and 1 teaspoon of mustard oil. cover the bowl and refrigerate for 1 hour.
In the meantime, soak the poppy seeds in water and then grind them along with cloves, ginger, and green chilies to form a smooth paste.
Heat 4 tablespoons of mustard oil in a wok or pan over medium heat. add bay leaves, cloves, cardamom, cinnamon stick, and fennel seeds. when they start to sizzle, add finely chopped onions and fry until golden.
Add chopped tomatoes and fry until they become mushy.
Stir in the poppy seed paste, red chilli powder, and garam masala powder. cook the masala until the oil starts to separate from the sides.
