Heat a skillet over medium-low heat, and dry roast the red chilies, whole black peppercorns, cumin seeds, fennel seeds, star anise, and curry leaves. this should take about 4-6 minutes.
Turn off the heat and allow the roasted mixture to cool.
Transfer the cooled mixture to a mixer jar and grind it into a coarse mixture without using any water.
Transfer the freshly ground masala to a bowl and set it aside.
