To prepare the malabar style sweet and spicy dates pickle, remove the seeds from the dates, roughly chop them, and set aside.
Heat oil in a wide pan, add mustard seeds, and let them splutter. then, add asafoetida and curry leaves, allowing the curry leaves to splutter as well.
Add ginger paste, garlic paste, and finely chopped green chillies to the pan. saute until the raw smell disappears.
Mix in turmeric powder and red chilli powder, ensuring that all the spices are well combined.
Add the chopped dates to the pan and cook until the dates become soft.
