For the spice powder:
In a pan, dry roast the following ingredients for the spice powder: coriander seeds, chana dal, urad dal split, white sesame seeds, cumin seeds, fenugreek seeds, dried red chillies, and raw peanuts. roast for about 2 minutes or until they become aromatic.
Allow the roasted ingredients to cool completely, and then grind them into a fine powder using a mixer grinder. if using peanuts, add them last to prevent the mixture from becoming oily. set the spice powder aside.
For the brinjals:
Wash and pat dry the small brinjals thoroughly. make a cross-shaped slit at the base of each brinjal, being careful not to slit them completely open.
