To prepare the tangy tamarind rice rava upma, start by washing the rice and spreading it over a muslin cloth to dry.
Coarsely grind the dried rice into rava (semolina-like texture).
Meanwhile, soak the tamarind in water and set it aside for 5 minutes.
Squeeze out the pulp from the soaked tamarind and strain the clear tamarind liquid. set it aside until needed.
Heat oil in a thick-bottomed kadai on medium heat. add the mustard seeds and let them splutter. then, add the curry leaves, dry red chillies, and asafoetida (hing).
