To prepare the spicy bread upma, begin by toasting the whole wheat bread slices. you can toast them in a toaster or on a skillet until they turn crisp and golden brown.
Once the bread slices are toasted, apply softened butter over them and cut them into small dices. set them aside.
In a large wok or kadai, heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil over medium heat. add the mustard seeds and allow them to crackle.
Now, add the sliced onions and chopped green chillies to the kadai and saute until the onions become soft and tender.
Once the onions are cooked, add the tomatoes, curry leaves, turmeric powder, and sambar powder. stir and cook the tomatoes until they turn slightly soft.
