Soak the paneer in hot water with 1/4 teaspoon of salt for five minutes. drain the water and crumble the paneer. if using fresh paneer, skip this step. set aside.
Heat oil in a saucepan over medium heat. once the oil is moderately hot, add cumin seeds and bay leaves.
After the seeds crackle, add green peas and green chili. stir for about a minute.
Add tomatoes, coriander powder, salt, sugar, and chili powder. mix well, cover the pan, and cook for 3-4 minutes until the tomatoes and peas become soft.
Add the crumbled paneer and cook for 1-2 minutes. avoid overcooking the paneer as it may lose its softness. if the mixture appears dry, add a few spoons of water.
