Rinse the arhar dal (split pigeon peas) thoroughly in water and add them to a 3-liter pressure cooker.
Add half cup chopped onions, one cup finely chopped tomatoes, two green chillies (you can substitute with one teaspoon of chopped anaheim pepper or serrano pepper), and one teaspoon finely chopped ginger.
Pour 2.5 cups of water into the pressure cooker. if cooking in a pot, you can add about 4 to 4.5 cups of water.
Add half teaspoon of turmeric powder and a pinch of asafoetida (hing). if you don't have asafoetida, you can skip it.
Mix well.
