Start by washing and soaking the chana dal in water for about an hour.
Cook the soaked dal in a pressure cooker with 2-1/2 cups of water, turmeric powder, and salt. cook for 8 whistles or approximately 30 minutes until the dal is fully cooked.
Allow the pressure to release naturally and set the cooked dal aside.
Heat mustard oil in a pan over medium heat.
Add the grated coconut and fry until golden brown. remove from heat and transfer to a separate bowl.
