Fill a large saucepan with water and bring it to a boil.
Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium-high heat. add the mirepoix (a mixture of diced onions, carrots, and celery) and cook, stirring, until softened, about 3 minutes. add the minced garlic, italian seasoning, salt, red pepper flakes, and black pepper. cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 1 minute.
Add the tomatoes and their juices, vegetable broth, and cannellini beans to the pot. bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to maintain a simmer. cover the pot and cook, stirring occasionally, until the tomatoes begin to break down, about 10 minutes.
While the soup is simmering, cook the whole wheat pasta in the boiling water for 1 minute less than the package directions. drain the pasta.
Stir the spinach into the soup until wilted. just before serving, add the cooked pasta to the soup and stir to combine.
