To begin making the tomato-based masoor dal curry, soak the masoor dal in water for about 20 minutes.
Boil the soaked dal in a saucepan with 3 to 4 cups of water until it becomes soft. cover the pan with a lid while cooking.
In a separate saucepan, heat one tablespoon of oil and fry the sliced onions on medium heat until they turn slightly browned.
Add the tomatoes and mix well. cover and cook until the tomatoes become soft and mushy, stirring occasionally.
Allow the mixture to cool down, and then grind it to a smooth paste along with ginger and garlic. use very little water while grinding.
