Superfoods have been gaining a lot of steam lately, but the reason is still unclear. Are they really ‘super’? What’s the reason behind superfoods being so hyped? Let’s see how much of that hype is real.
A superfood can be defined as any food that is rich in compounds such as antioxidants, fibres, and fatty acids, which are considered beneficial to a person’s health. They have a very high nutritional density. This means they provide very few calories and a substantial amount of nutrients.
There is no definite answer to this question as the term “superfood” itself is relative. Many people will consider kale to be a superfood, while others will consider blueberries to be a superfood. However, there are a few foods that, quite a lot of people, consider “super”, like green tea, eggs, kefir, yogurt, nuts, and seeds, berries, dark leafy greens, spirulina, quinoa, chia seeds, legumes, and avocado.
Berries
Strawberries, cranberries, and blueberries are rich in vitamin C, K, and fibre while acai berries are rich in antioxidants. Goji berries are high in antioxidants, and vitamin C and they have been known to improve eye health.
Dark Leafy Greens
Kale, spinach, and broccoli are some dark leafy greens that are packed with vitamins A, C, and K.
Spirulina
Spirulina is a type of algae that is rich in protein and antioxidants. It helps to improve cognitive function, lower blood pressure, and boost the immune system.
Quinoa
Quinoa is a type of grain that is high in fibre, magnesium, and zinc. It helps to regulate blood sugar levels, improve heart health, and increase energy levels.
Chia seeds
Chia seeds are rich in fibre and omega-3 fatty acids helping regulate blood sugar levels.
Legumes
Legumes include beans, lentils, and peas and they are an excellent source of protein, fibre, and vitamins.
Avocados
Avocados are loaded with healthy fats, fibre, and vitamins. They are a great source of potassium, which can help regulate blood pressure. They also contain lutein and zeaxanthin, the two antioxidants that can help protect your eyes from age-related damage.
Superfoods are rich in vitamin and mineral content which helps the body ward off diseases and stay healthy. When taken with a well-balanced diet, these foods can also promote weight loss and heart health, improve energy levels, and even reduce the effects of ageing.
Many superfoods contain beta-carotene which scientists believe may protect cell membranes from toxin damage and might help to slow the growth of cancer cells. Spinach is considered rich in zeaxanthin and lutein-like carotenoids that help remove unstable molecules, known as free radicals, from the body before they cause any damage. Some studies have also shown that they may protect against cancer of the mouth, oesophagus, and stomach.
Many superfoods are rich in fibre, which can help prevent diabetes and digestive problems while phytochemicals reduce your risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. Apart from these specific benefits, superfoods are also believed to protect your organs from toxins, regulate metabolism, help lower cholesterol and reduce internal inflammation.
There are many superfoods and they offer a multitude of benefits mostly because of their vitamin and mineral reserves. You must do proper research and consult a professional if you are suffering from any medical condition, before including superfoods in your diet. Some of the most common ones are mentioned below.
